Bio-1 Governance Board Spotlight on Steve McGill, Associate Director, Government Affairs, Novo Nordisk
By Rashi Jain

Steve McGill is a man of action. He believes in more than hoping and promising; he goes a step further to take the responsibility for making things happen.

He would like to see the life science industry at the forefront without compromising on any social responsibilities or abusing our environment, and makes sure that all his efforts support this goal. He currently serves as Associate Director, Government Affairs at Novo Nordisk. He is also a member of the Steering Committee at Healthcare Institute of New Jersey (HINJ), and a Governance Board member for Bio-1 WIRED. Most of his work at Bio-1 and HINJ involves planning and execution. His activities range from implementing and advocating healthcare policies and educating legislators on how they impact the bioscience community to indulging in social responsibilities for HINJ; and from funding projects and drafting sustainability plans to redefining ways of measurement (for various reports) for Bio-1.

A little skeptical upon first hearing Bio-1's goal to help expand the industry, Mr. McGill was more than glad to join Bio-1. He points out that “some of the most amazing actions and reactions take place in concentrations,” such as ours (spanning from northeast to mid-Atlantic region). These concentrations best reinforce economic growth, career development, problem solving and innovation, which are key components for an industry to thrive. He finds Bio-1 to be more than a website, or a one-stop resource. Based on the accomplishments and on-going projects, he perceives it as an entry point for novices to gain depth in their field of interest; a portal that connects to myriad resources; and a destination for networking across the bioscience community and offering deliverables to students, educators, job seekers, researchers, industry experts, and entrepreneurs. It serves as a gathering place to bring together ideas and innovations, and a vehicle to drive countless resources.
